The name of Los Abrigos comes from the existence on its coast of numerous sheltered coves or “shelters” is a coastal town. It covers an area of 6.52 km² that includes the protected natural area of the Montaña Roja special nature reserve.
The area of Los Abrigos is one of the most used natural harbors in the south of the island during the first years of colonization in the 16th century, being originally known as the cove of Los Abadejos.
